Moondarra

Neil Prentice is a Melbourne hospitality legend and all round great guy.  His Moondarra property in the foothills of Mount Baw Baw, Gippsland, is set on 138 acres; most of which are dedicated to wagyu cattle, and 10 acres of which are for growing grapes. It’s mostly Pinot Noir, but there’s a decent amount of Nebbiolo and some small plantings of Picolit, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Friulano.

Like his uncle, he practices biodynamic farming, although he hates the word (“It’s become a marketing term more than anything,” he says). Instead, he’d rather talk about the fact that his vines have never been irrigated nor fertilised, and are sprayed with skim milk powder and “other weird things” rather than pesticides. He tracks the overall health of his vines by monitoring one in particular (he named it Kevin), and a gas gun explodes intermittently over the vineyard, scaring away birds with nothing more than sound.

What's in the box?

A equal parts blend of Pinot Gris, Ribolla, Friulano,  inspired by the legendary Italian wines of Josko Gravner.


A savoury and spicy wine, we taste fresh ginger, pear, citrus rind, and almonds.  Texturally, this is a joy, with a phenolic crunch to it, and a salty, briny delicious finish on the palate. 

The fruit is crushed rather than pressed off of skins. Some juice is left to ferment to dryness on skins, some partially fermented on skins and some just left for a few hours pre-ferment.

The portion of juice with skins is fermented in small, open bins and the cap plunged occasionally to keep wet and avoid volatility. The wine is drained to old oak with the yeast lees to integrate the sourdough flavours from the autolysis of the lees before bottling in spring without fining or filtration.
About a third of the juice is fermented in small, old oak without skin contact.


The wine was unfined and unfiltered, with SO2 added after ferment to preserve freshness.
